Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is in record as saying that he wants a small squad this season, 22 players is the number mentioned. Well with the signing of Willain and the impending arrival of Samuel Eto’o, Chelsea are way over that number with days left in the transfer window.
According to the Chelsea web site, the first team squad consists of 26 players:
Goalkeepers:Petr Cech, Mark Schwarzer, Henrique Hilario
Defenders: Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole, David Luiz, Gary Cahill, John Terry, Cesar Azpilicueta, Ryan Bertrand
Midfielders: Michael Essien, Ramires, Frank Lampard, Juan Mata, Oscar, Mikel, Victor Moses, Andre Schurrle, Kevin De Bruyne, Marco van Ginkel, Eden Hazard, Willian
Forwards:Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o (not confirmed)
Assuming Mourinho keeps 3 goalkeepers, the current squad has four extra players. So who gets sold or loaned out?
The two areas that looked overstocked are in midfield and up-front. The arrival of Eto’o probably means one forward being sold, with Demba Ba the most obvious candidate.
That leaves 3 midfielders, out of 12 to get moved out. Victor Moses has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, and I expect him to move on this weekend.
Now we are down to two. Michael Essien spent last season at Real Madrid, but with so many others players who can play that holding role, I cannot see Mourinho keeping him.
And the last one? If the rumours are right Chelsea will see Juan Mata to get back some of the cash that they spent this summer. But I cannot believe that Mourinho will sell the Player of the Year for the last two seasons. That leaves one of the wingers. I don’t think Chelsea need all three of Andre Schurrle, Kevin De Bruyne and Marco van Ginkel, especially as Ramires and Willian can play wide. So I expect Kevin De Bruyne or Marco van Ginkel to be loaned out.
Who do you think Chelsea will let go before the transfer window closes?
