Chelsea star Eden Hazard faces a charge of bringing the game into disrepute and a potential multi-match ban from the FA after this moment of madness 13 minutes from time at the Liberty Stadium tonight.
Speaking after the match on Chelsea’s own TV channel, Hazard said:
“The boy put his whole body on to the ball and I was trying to kick the ball and not the boy.
“The boy came into our changing room and we had a quick chat. I apologised to the boy, he apologised as well and it’s over. Sorry.”
Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez tried to defend the indefensible by insisting both parties had been at fault saying:
“The boy has been into our dressing room, they have spoken and apologised to each other. They knew they were both wrong.
“He was wasting time, Hazard wanted to get the ball back quickly and they both made mistakes. We can’t change things now.
“I didn’t see the incident during the game, so I can’t say too much. But it left us playing with 10 players, which was a problem because we needed three goals.
“We will deal with it internally. He (Hazard) was frustrated. The ballboy was wrong and Eden said he was wrong, too.
“Do you not think we are disappointed with the situation? That we don’t regret what has happened? Listen to me, as Chelsea FC, we know it was a mistake.
“But we talked with the boy, we talked with the player. The boy was with us in the dressing room, everyone was very clear.”
The big question is what will the FA do? Remember they banned Manchester United’s Eric Cantona for eight months for his kung-fu assault on a fan 18 years ago.
I am not comparing the two incidents, expect to say they were footballers attacking people inside a football stadium.
So while I do not expect Hazard to get 8 months, I would not be too surprised if the FA bans him for the rest of the season.

I suppose he is a ballboy whose duty is to pick & return balls as quickly as possible. He represented Swansea (wrongly) as he was wearing d Swan trunk. Swansea should be fined as one of their rep tried to end d game without d referee consent.

To both the ball boy and Hazard were wrong. The ball boy was trying to waste the time while Hazard was also trying to get the ball from him. FA should be considerate in their judgement ….but both of them should punished for their misconduts.
I think banning him from a few matches will do him well. He needs a rest anyway. You can’t bank on him (Eden), Mata and Oscar to win games everytime. As the speculation on Hazard continues, at some point I wished Torres kicked the boy. Maybe then Chelsea would have reason to get rid of him.I don’t think the incident was that bad. As a Chelsea Fan I would not let that cloud my judgement of Hazard as he gives everything to the club and English football. One incident and the whole world wants to crucify him.
The incidence between Eden Harzard and the ball boy is, no doubt, controversial and to me, caution is required by the FA not to overreact on the matter. It is controversial because there are two opposite sides to the coin.. While some would argue that Hazard did the kicking on purpose as a result of frustration due to the fact that the boy was ‘delibrately’ waisting time, others might not agree to such claim.. Should we judge that act of that incidence, the intent of the penalised should be the central focus. Did Harzard delibrately kick the boy as a result of frustration as his boss has explicitly commented or he attempted to kick the ball as he has asserted. These are two different things… The bottom line is that if Hazard claimed that he didnot kick the boy on purpose, i dont think he is wrong. From the perspective of the camera, the boy got the ball, then held it( on purpose), then Harzard went for the ball, not to kick the boy but to collect the ball. But the boy held the ball and laid it on his belly. Harzard kicked the part where ball was hidden and not any other part. Dont forget he had already attempted to get the ball from the said boy by dragging it with him before the boy laid on the ball bellywise. To me, i think the boy should receive the brunt. His intension was clear- he wanted to waste time. But it will not be fair enough to judge Harzard by the very act, but look beyond the act, to the intent… Thnk u!

It was a mistake. Hazard was frustrated that he cudnt control his gust. He sudnt be blamed too much bcos he is a human. FA sud be lenient with him bcos of the condition he was during the match.

I see nothing wrong in what Eden did, as a player he was trying to save his team. Any footballer in the world would do the same thing if they were in his shoes.
