A pleasant surprise to hear that Ashley Cole has reached an agreement on a new contract at Chelsea.
While the deal has not yet been officially signed, the formalities, of what is understood to be a one-year extension to his contract, are expected to be completed early next week.
Despite being linked with moves to Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester United it is understood that Cole indicated to Chelsea he would prefer to stay, even on a reduced salary.
Cole’s deal will come as a huge relief to Chelsea supporters who feared the club was systematically phasing-out the old guard of players as owner Roman Abramovich overhauled the squad.
Cole had hoped to secure a two-year deal but was told that this would not be possible. He has been free, once the January transfer window opened, to talk to clubs outside the Premier League and could have signed a pre-contract deal.
Not you just need to sign Lamps Roman!
